The real risk

Most attacks start with an email, not a hacker.

Criminals rarely break in. They log in, with a password from a leak, or they send a convincing email and wait for someone to click.

Fake invoices and bank-detail changes

An email that looks like it’s from your supplier, or from you, asks for payment to a "new" account. Once the money moves, it rarely comes back.

Stolen or reused passwords

One leaked password, used for email, banking and the website, unlocks all three. Two-step login stops most of these attacks.

Email sent in your name

Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain, anyone can send email that appears to come from your address, to your own customers.

60%

of major cyber incidents at key Irish organisations involved phishing.

The fix is rarely expensive. It’s usually a handful of settings that were never switched on.

New in Ireland

Get your business ready for the Digital Trust Mark.

In 2026 .IE, Ireland’s national domain registry, launched the Digital Trust Mark. Businesses that score an A on its 28 tests can show the Mark on their website and emails for 12 months.

Most small businesses fall short on the same few email and domain settings. We find them, fix them and get you ready to apply.

Digital Trust Ireland is an independent local business. We are not part of, or endorsed by, .IE. The assessment itself is done at digitaltrust.ie.

How exposed is your business? 8 questions.

Tap yes or no. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Does everyone sign in to email with two-step login (a code or app as well as a password)?

Does your domain have SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up, so nobody can send email pretending to be you?

Does every person use a different password for every account (ideally in a password manager)?

Is your business data backed up somewhere separate, and have you tested restoring it?

Do you know exactly who still has access to your email, files and website, including ex-staff?

Is your website on HTTPS and kept up to date (WordPress, plugins and theme)?

Would your staff spot a fake invoice or a "change of bank details" email?

Are laptops and phones locked with a PIN and encrypted, so a lost device isn’t a data breach?

All FAQs
I’m a small business. Would anyone really target me?

Yes, and usually not personally. Most attacks are automated: millions of phishing emails, password guessing and fake invoices sent to anyone. Small businesses get caught because they have the same email and banking as bigger firms, with fewer protections switched on.

What do SPF, DKIM and DMARC actually do?

They are three short records on your domain that tell the world which servers are allowed to send email as you. SPF lists the senders, DKIM adds a digital signature, and DMARC tells Gmail, Outlook and others what to do with fakes. Without them, a criminal can send an email that looks like it came from your address.

Is Microsoft 365 secure out of the box?

It is a good base, but many important protections are optional or need to be configured. We commonly find two-step login missing for some users, old accounts still active, mail forwarding rules nobody remembers, and files shared with "anyone with the link".

What is the .IE Digital Trust Mark?

It is a scheme from .IE, Ireland’s national domain registry, launched in 2026. Businesses complete an assessment of their domain, website and email at digitaltrust.ie. With an A rating you can display the Mark for 12 months. We help you fix the items that hold your score back. Digital Trust Ireland is an independent business and is not part of .IE.
